Burn Fashion industry

It will come to a surprise to many to find out that most fashion companies burn or shred last season’s clothes. Yet the phenomenon is commonplace and widespread.

Burberry was at the height of the controversy having burnt $38 million worth of clothing in 2018 alone. Unfortunately it is not only the luxury houses protecting their exclusive brands. Fast fashion is following suit. Urban Outfitters, JC Penny, H&M, Nike, Victoria’s Secret and more have been caught burning their unsold garments as it’s easier than storing/selling. There is even a short documentary recounting the story of the Indian town shredding clothes.

Top Five European Slow Fashion Brands

In a world with finite resources and a changing climate, isn’t this a profoundly ironic discovery of the fashion world? Perhaps making less clothes to begin with could be the solution…or simply upcycling them!
